The 120 km Rwenzori chain is regarded tobe the legendary snow-capped
Mountainsof the Moon, described by Ptolemy inAD150. Reaching
an elevation of 5,109m,it is also Africa's tallest mountain
range, exceeded in altitude only by the freestanding Mount Kenya
and Kilimanjaro. The distinctive glacial peaks are visible formiles
around, but the slopes above 1,600mare the preserve of hikers,
who rate theRwenzoris to be the most challenging of allAfrican
mountains. A variety of largemammals inhabits the lower slopes,
but theRwenzoris are notable more for theirmajestic scenery
and varied vegetation. The trails lead through rainforest rattlingwith
monkeys and birds, then tall bambooforest, before emerging on
the high-altitudemoorland zone, a landscape of bizarre giantlobelias,
towered over by black rock andwhite snow, looking for all the
world likethe set of a science fiction film.
